Fireground survival training
Thu. Apr 29th 2010

Company 15 members recently went through a May Day Awareness training during their Monday night drills. The class teaches firefighters when and how to call Mayday. This course was developed to help firefighters learn survival techniques in the event of an emergency involving a firefighter. The term "May Day" is universal for someone in distress. Firefighters had a short class on how to call a May Day using e acronym LUNAR which is Location, Unit, Name, Assignment, Resources. Using this acronym helps firefighters by remembering to give location they are or last location they knew they were. The unit and name of the firefighter their assignment and resources needed to affect a rescue. Here is a sample of a firefighter declaring a mayday using LUNAR. "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday' I am trapped my last location was the first floor A side of the structure, I am firefighter Hall with Engine 15 attack line send RIT'' By using LUNAR it tells command what they need to know so the RIT team can rescue the downed firefighter. There are additional Fire ground Survival courses such as May Day firefighter down which teaches firefighters self rescue and other techniques used by a RIT team to rescue down firefighters. The second part of the class consisted of the firefighters being put in  simulated situations  of being trapped, lost or disoriented under zero or low visibility allowing them to practice calling a May Day and using LUNAR.
